Section 1: Background and needs analysis
Why tactile books matter:
- Visually impaired children often have limited access to adapted books.
- Missing visual input means missing key concepts and experiences.
- Tactile books offer a unique opportunity to enrich learning:
- Stimulate curiosity and imagination
- Support concept development
- Enable access to stories and knowledge
- Adults (parents, educators) are essential guides in making books fun and understandable

Section 2: The process
Our goal: To help VI children to obtain a reading experience most equal to that of their sighted peers, and train parents and teachers how to guide them.
Main results:
- improved and extended universal guidelines for tactile books and illustrations including recommendations of cost-effective approaches
- Prototype books, tested with children aged 4–12.
- Recommendations on cooperation between VI professionals and printing houses
We focused on:
- Concept development
- Narrative support
- Learning through tactile exploration
- Affordability & accessibility

Section 3: Books, Concepts & Challenges
Example books:
- A Long Journey (ages 4–8): early concept exploration
- Roundy (9+): tactile drawings, self-reading with support
Core ideas:
- Understanding tactile images by learning visual-spatial principles
- Children must learn to “read” top/front/side views
- Concepts are embedded in stories (e.g., how a duck swims vs. a fish)
- Books focused on climate change
Reading is more than decoding text – it’s about understanding the world.
